Reports show less than one percent of all venture capital money went to digital startups with African-American founders in 2010. On November 13, 2011, CNN broadcasted its fourth installment of its Black in America documentary series entitled Silicon Valley The New Promised Land hosted by Soledad OBrien. The show was met with widespread controversy and some cheers. The show follows eight entrepreneurs who travel to Silicon Valley who participate in a 9-week boot camp to work on building their products and pitching their ideas to Silicon Valley venture capitalists. Less than 30 percent of the boot camp attendees received venture capital funding at airing.
Suttons company remains unfunded and he talks to Cynthia Nevels on The C-Radio Show to share insight on why there is so little venture capital investment made in minority and women owned tech startups in the United States.
Nevels, who was recently is quoted in Wall Street Journals small business column Small Talk (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204479504576638813878112094.html) states, I lived and worked for Internet consulting startup and Siebel Systems in Silicon Valley. I personally saw wealth distributed disproportionately first hand. Moreover, a large percentage of the funding went to businesses that were not lead or founded by minorities. Thats a fact.
