Live at American Idol: Will Lauren's Minor Mishap Kill Her Idol Dream?

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.

With only one week to go, it's hard to say who of Idol's final three will be going home Thursday. They all ooze talent and charisma, but from our seat behind the judges table Wednesday night, it was clear Lauren Alaina was the least confident of the crew.

So how was Lauren handling the pressure when the cameras turned off? Plus, what celeb told us her prediction of who will be walking away with the title of American Idol next week?

MORE: Glee-Dux: Four Solos and a Funeral?Plus We Prepare for Nationals!

There's bound to be some slips and trips on a live television singing competition, and tonight was full of them. While Haley Reinhart handled her stumble on the stairs like a pro and laughed if off, Lauren's lost spot during Jimmy Iovine's pick in round two left her rattled. After chatting with Ryan Seacrest post-second performance, Lauren walked offstage with her arms wrapped around her head as if to say, "OMG, I blew it."

Followed up with her backstage leg shimmer rubdown that was carried over to the stage, Lauren was letting her awkward, shy side show with an embarrassed smile. It was cute, but her lack of confidence is her biggest downfall in the competition, and it could stop her one week short from the finals. As always, Scotty McCreery was cool, calm and collected, sipping on water and casually waving to fans during commercial breaks. If you're a Scotty fan or not, the kid has what it takes to be a big star.

That wasn't the only thing we noticed. It seems Lauren's fan base was slightly faltering. While Haley and Scotty were getting immediate standing ovations, enthusiastic "in it to win it!" from Randy Jackson and incessant screaming from fans during commercial breaks, Lauren's performances and appearances seemed to get slightly less love from the audience.

We were lucky enough to be seated next to the always lovely and never aging Lisa Loeb (seriously, the girl looks ah-mazing), who told us she's rooting for Haley because she likes her different and original voice. However, she thinks Scotty is most likely to win. After snacking on something that she said "tasted like Maalox," she stopped by the judges table to say hello. Randy and Steven Tyler were stoked to see Lisa and greeted her with smiles and excited hellos.

The Idol audience was treated to a sort of surprise after the show. The show's top 11 stormed the stage to celebrate Fox exec Mike?Darnell's birthday, but it was confusing as to why the majority of the former Idol contestants were in sweats, elastic waistband shorts and slip-on shoes. Even Pia Toscano dropped her glam look and was almost unrecognizable in glasses, flats and a green hoodie with her hair pulled back in a ponytail.

After the cake, photos, hugs and love, we waited 40 minutes for Nicole Scherzinger's pretaped performance with 50 Cent. After three takes, tons of pyrotechnics and lots of booty shaking, it was over. But shhh! Don't tell your friends it's not live when it airs Thursday night!

Who do you think will be leaving the Idol spotlight tomorrow night? Do you think Scotty is going to win it all? Let us know in the comments!

Raiders | Adding QB Young a 'Raiders' type of move - Fantasy Sports

Matt Williamson, from ESPN.com and Scouts Inc, believes that adding QB Vince Young would be a 'Raiders type' of move. Young's time in Tennessee is done and is likely to be traded or cut.

Our View: The Raiders have Jason Campbell as their starter, but Kyle Boller as the primary backup. Young could compete for playing time, and might be able to impress enough to get the starting nod. Hey, it's Al Davis so you just never know.

Tiger Woods talked with reporters after withdrawing from The Players Championship this morning.

Tiger Woods' bid to once again be the world's best golfer suffered another setback today.

He walked off the course after nine holes at The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., this morning.

USA Today's GameOn! blog writes that Woods was 6-over-par at the time and was visibly limping ? he hurt his left knee (which has had four operations) and his left Achilles during the Masters Tournament last month.

He told reporters, according to The Associated Press, that "I'm having a hard time walking."

Woods hasn't won on the tour since his personal life and (later) word of his extramarital affairs exploded on to front pages and websites in November 2009.

As Eyder reported Monday, Woods is now ranked No. 8 in the world.

Florida Budget Woes Mean Environmental Cuts

Florida's Legislature is cutting some $30 million from Everglades restoration to help close the state's $4 billion budget shortfall.

Florida's Legislature wraps up its annual budget session this week. Like other states with tight budgets, Florida is setting new spending priorities.

Environmental protection is one area that's seeing big cuts.

Tough Choices

Driving west from Miami through the Everglades on Highway 41 ? the Tamiami Trail ? you can see federal dollars at work. Dan Kimball, superintendent of Everglades National Park, says he's excited about an $81 million project that will raise the road. For decades, it's acted like a dam, keeping water from flowing south through the Everglades.

Despite progress on the project, a new threat has emerged to Everglades restoration. It can be found 500 miles away in Tallahassee, where Florida's governor and Legislature are grappling with a $4 billion budget shortfall. As Gov. Rick Scott says, the shortfall is forcing them to make tough choices in many areas ? including protecting the environment.

"We've got to make sure we spend the money we have, and the property that we own, we've got to take care of it as well as we can," Scott says. "Right now, it's a little harder because we're walking into a big budget deficit. This job requires you to prioritize how you spend your money."

Scott, a Republican, ran for governor promising he'd operate the state like a business. Since taking office, he's made clear that his priority is to reduce taxes and regulations for industry. One of the areas he's targeted for cuts is the environment.

Following Scott's lead, Florida's Republican-controlled Legislature is slashing some $30 million from Everglades restoration and eliminating funding for a number of other environmental programs ? including a land conservation effort that's been in place for two decades.

The "Dark Ages"

Those actions have led environmentalists to worry Florida is returning to its "dark ages" ? when the state's beaches, water and open land were viewed as commodities to be exploited.

At the Tropical Audubon Society headquarters in Miami, Director Laura Reynolds unscrews a time capsule. It's filled with pictures, letters and artifacts placed inside for a purpose. "A lot of people in the community that work on environmental issues were so frustrated with what's going on in the state right now that we thought, 'We need to send a message to the future,' " Reynolds says.

It's not just the cut in spending on environmental programs that has Reynolds and other activists upset. It's also a pro-business, anti-regulation agenda aimed at restraining the ability of the state and local governments to control growth and development. At Scott's suggestion, the Legislature has largely dismantled a state agency that for 25 years has served as a check on sprawl and runaway development.

Possible Effects On Tourism

Kirk Fordham, head of the Everglades Foundation, has been working to convince legislators and the governor that dismantling regulations to help developers and the construction industry is shortsighted. He warns that loosening environmental protections may endanger the state's largest industry: tourism.

"That's really the backbone of our state's economy," he says. "We don't have a Silicon Valley. We don't have a steel or auto industry in Florida. Our economy is so intertwined with our natural resources and our environment that if we allow that to deteriorate, then we're really sacrificing our future economic growth."

Florida's former governor and three-term senator, Bob Graham, says he believes the state's elected leaders may be losing sight of some important core values long defended by both political parties.

In a recent op-ed piece published statewide, he called on politicians to reassess their plans to downgrade environmental protections. "The consequence of doing this is to go back to the era where we looked at Florida and just said it's not really worth very much," says Graham. "If we don't like what it is, let's change it and let's put it on the auction block."

Despite the pleas of the former governor and others, Florida lawmakers are finalizing a budget that reorders state priorities ? one that puts the need to promote development and growth before environmental protection.

Casio Tryx (EX-TR100) review

Given the sheer quantity of marketing muscle that Casio put behind the Tryx, you'd think the company was gearing up to rival Nikon and Canon in the DSLR space. Instead, out popped the outre device you see above. Without qualification, this is one of the strangest, most bizarrely designed cameras we've ever seen, featuring a pop-out display and a grand total of two buttons for operation. At 4.8- x 2.3- x 0.6-inches, it's certainly one of the slimmest, easy-to-carry point-and-shoots on the market, but is the absence of an optical zoom and a removable battery enough to tank an otherwise radical idea? Head on past the break for our two pennies.

NATO Sending Mixed Messages about Afghan Militias

Staff Sgt. Richard Rodriguez was on a mission. On March 27, the stocky military policeman from the U.S. Army?s 10th Mountain Division led a group of American and Afghan security forces on a foot patrol through the town of Baraki Barak, 50 miles south of Kabul. (See video above.)

Among Rodriguez?s goals: to identify young, male candidates for a new militia-style, neighborhood-watch program ? and enroll them in NATO?s biometric database for vetting.

Spotting one likely candidate, Rodriguez extolled the virtues of joining the so-called ?Afghan Local Police? as another soldier took the man?s photo and fingerprints. If the recruit signed up, he would join an estimated 5,000 other men already committed to wear the blue ALP uniform and stand guard in their own villages, armed with AK-47s and their intimate knowledge of the local people and terrain.

NATO and Afghan commanders both agree that these fresh forces can?t come soon enough. After no fewer than five attempts since 2001 to stand up inexpensive, minimally-trained local militia forces, the U.S.-led alliance is running out of time. The first of roughly 100,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan are slated to withdraw this summer, potentially leaving a huge gap in the country?s defenses.

But when it comes to training and leadership for the new patrolmen, there seems to be some confusion. Some U.S. and Afghan officers say the local police will be trained and led by Afghan National Police. But NATO?s top cop-trainer insists that?s not the case ? and only foreign Special Forces will have that responsibility.

The absence of clear plan could undermine the local-police program, at a stage of the war where there?s simply no time to try raising yet another pro-NATO militia.

Analyst: HBO Go is 'HBO On Demand on Steroids'

NEW YORK - HBO Go, the new service that allows HBO subscribers to access loads of HBO content on any device at any time, should make investors in parent company Time Warner more comfortable about the premium TV service's continued growth and outlook, Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne said Thursday.

"Investor concerns over the long-term growth and profitability of HBO has weighed on TW's valuation," he explained in a report Thursday. "Ultimately, Go is aimed at increasing the lifetime value of an HBO customer by reducing churn and potentially increasing the customer base beyond the 30 million that pay for HBO today."

HBO will contribute about 25 percent of TW's 2011 operating income before depreciation and amortization, he estimated.

"This product rollout is significant for HBO, for its parent Time Warner and for the broader media landscape," said Swinburne, calling HBO Go "traditional HBO On Demand on steroids." HBO On Demand is the company's on-demand system on TV screens in telecom, cable and satellite TV homes.

Beyond computers, HBO Go will come to mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices on May 2.

"Roughly 50% of HBO original series DVD purchases tend to come from non-HBO subs that will not have Go access," Swinburne also highlighted in suggesting that offering more? content in digital form may not cannibalize prior-season DVD sales. "But perhaps more importantly, the DVD risk was deemed worth it for the potential upside associated with a robust Go product that could drive subscriber growth and a firm grasp of where the industry is headed - which is more digital and less physical."

HTC Thunderbolt drops to $130 for new Verizon customers at Amazon over the weekend

If the Droid Charge has you thinking that Verizon LTE phones have to cost an arm, a leg, and an extra $100, you'll want to take a look at this. Amazon Wireless is chopping the Thunderbolt, Verizon's original 4G bad boy, down to the extremely palatable price of $130 on contract, valid for new Verizon subscribers who buy the phone between now and midnight Pacific Time on Monday. The 4.3-inch, Android 2.2 smartphone from HTC impressed us greatly with the 4G speeds it was able to pull down in our review, and while those might not remain quite so spectacular once that network starts loading up more customers, a price like the present one makes it an excellent proposition in the short term. The source link is where you'll find it.

How to cheat at benchmarks (and why we should downplay their importance)

ZOMG QUADRANT!!11!!

Benchmarks can be useful, whether we're talking mobile or any other computer hardware.  There is a problem though -- you have to depend on everyone being honest.  Let me explain.  Anytime you see a video or a screenshot of a benchmark score, what you're really seeing is a measure of how the software interacts with the hardware.  There are two big problems with that: No two Android phones run the same software, and there's always some joker who wants to cheat.  recently our pal John from Phone Arena noted some Quadrant scores of a new handset that are just too low compared to the other phones listed.  And good on John for pointing it out.

Sure, benchmarks can be fun, like see how little impact LG's UI has on the Optimus 2X compared to Stock Froyo, and they can be useful if you're running them yourself to gauge some changes you're making to your own software.  But we're over it. We're going to base our judgment of performance based on performance, and not numbers.

It's just too damn easy to cheat at all benchmarks, because they are just Android apps.  Look at all the other magic folks do with Android apps, and ask yourself -- are benchmarks so different that they can't be "hacked"?  The answer is no, and we're going to show you how to hack at the easiest (but definitely not the only) one to manipulate, Quadrant.

Check it out after the jump.
