Phillies' Hamels still has Red Sox's number

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:40 p.m. ET May 18, 2012

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - It was no surprise that Philadelphia earned its season-best sixth straight victory with Cole Hamels on the mound.

Hamels pitched seven strong innings, and Hunter Pence and Freddy Galvis homered to lead the Phillies to a 6-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

Hamels (6-1) gave up three runs on six hits while striking out nine and walking one. It was the sixth straight win for Hamels, who improved to 4-0 in five career starts against Boston.

"I'm just doing everything I've done the past couple of years," Hamels said. "I can't say there's any secret. We're able to battle and get runs and I'm able to hold it. It's the same sort of way I've gone out and pitched. I try to put up as many zeroes as I possibly can."

Philadelphia improved to 7-1 in Hamels' eight starts this season.

"I'm focused on trying to get wins, no matter how they come," Hamels said. "If I can plug away and do my job, then good things will happen and they have been."

Streaking Carlos Ruiz went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs for Philadelphia, which moved two games above .500 for the first time this season. Ruiz, who entered leading major league catchers in several offensive categories, is 11 for 17 in his last five games.

Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save in as many chances. Papelbon had 219 saves in six seasons with the Red Sox before signing a four-year, $50 million deal with Philadelphia in the offseason.

The closer said there wasn't any extra meaning in getting the save against his former team.

"I want to go out there and try to preserve all the wins I can for my starters," Papelbon said. "I think for me I take a little extra pride in that. That's basically kind of what it boiled down to for me."

Adrian Gonzalez, Mike Aviles and Cody Ross homered for the Red Sox.

The game matched clubs with the second- (Phillies, $175 million) and third-highest (Red Sox, $173 million) payrolls, though each entered in last place in their division.

Daniel Bard (3-5), converted to a starter before this season, matched his shortest outing of the year by allowing five runs on three hits with five walks in five innings.

The right-hander struggled with control in the first inning when the Phillies scored four runs on just two hits thanks to three walks. Philadelphia went up 2-0 on Ruiz's two-run single to center before Ty Wigginton's sacrifice fly and John Mayberry Jr.'s RBI double gave the Phillies a four-run lead.

"I'm still getting out of my relieving mode and I needed to be more aggressive there," Bard said of the first inning. "This loss is definitely on me."

Said Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, "Those amount of walks are not acceptable. He just didn't have command."

Hamels said the early run support was a boost.

"Being able to score runs early is huge," he said. "It puts a slight cushion on just trying to go out and battle. Even when you do get a ton of runs in the first inning it almost seems it's not enough because they keep pounding away on you and keep battling back."

Boston got a run back in the third on Aviles' solo homer to left in the third. The Red Sox put runners on first and second with no outs in the fourth, but managed just one run on Daniel Nava's sacrifice fly.

Pence upped Philadelphia's advantage to 5-2 with a solo homer to left-center in the fifth before Ross responded with his own homer in the sixth to pull Boston within 5-3. It was Ross' fifth off of Hamels in 37 at-bats.

"(Hamels) had a good fastball," said Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin, who filled in for suspended manager Charlie Manuel. "He wasn't as sharp as he had been over the course of the year. He did settle down, did a great job. He made a few mistakes but certainly pitched well enough to win and we're all pretty pleased."

Gonzalez's homer off the second deck in right off reliever Chad Qualls in the eighth made it 5-4. But Galvis got the run back in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot to left off Franklin Morales.

Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was forced to leave the game in the bottom of the fifth with a cut on his left ear after Bard's pitch hit Wigginton, deflected off Wigginton's right forearm and hit the catcher on the left side of the head just below the ear.

Saltalamacchia immediately went to the ground, appearing to be in a great deal of pain, and stayed face down for a few minutes before being attended to by the Boston training staff. He walked off under his own power and was replaced by Kelly Shoppach.

Valentine was ejected in the ninth inning by first-base umpire Gary Darling for arguing Darling's out call at first base on Marlon Byrd's groundout.

Ross fouled a ball off his left leg in the eighth inning and didn't come out in the field in the ninth.

Notes: Manuel missed the game after being suspended one game for his ejection by umpire Bob Davidson Tuesday night. ... Philadelphia's crowd of 45,205 was the 223rd straight sellout, and 239th counting postseason play. ... Former Red Sox manager Butch Hobson, now heading the Lancaster Barnstormers in the Atlantic League, became the 20th manager to reach 1,500 career victories with the club's win Thursday. ... Boston left-hander Jon Lester (2-3, 3.71) is scheduled to face Phillies right-hander Joe Blanton (4-3, 2.96) on Saturday night.

Cape Verde: Encouraging Storytelling and Creative Writing ? Global ...

[All links lead to sites in Portuguese.]

Set over the course of seven weeks, a creative writing competition promoted by the young Cape Verdean journalist Odair Varela on his blog, Crioulo n'Descontra, has led a dozen word lovers from three different continents to get behind their keyboards and let their imaginations flow.

The competition was launched at the end of March [en] to ?promote a taste for writing and for linguistic and artistic evolution?. Odair suggested a set of four challenges; the responses, written in either poetry or prose, were published on his blog.

On 9th May the winners were announced, determined by counting the number of views their texts had received. This article will provide an overview of the stories told.

What will Cape Verde be like in 2090?

In the first challenge, competitors were asked to imagine possible routes for Cape Verde in terms of sustainable development, energy, environment and climate change. Anete Carvalho wrote ?Pa?s Museu? (Museum Country), Jos? Soares posted a poem, ?Verdes eram as ilhas?, (The Islands were Green), and ?Retrospectiva 2012-2090? (2012-2090: Retrospective) was written by Silvianne Spencer. The piece with the most views was a poem written by Suruk Rodrigues:

Men of the Atlantic. Photo by Martin Edstrom copyright Demotix (27/07/2008).

Men of the Atlantic. Photo by Martin Edstrom copyright Demotix (27/07/2008).

Constr?i-se uma terra de bet?o.
E do sonho cultivado, colhe-se desilus?o!
Que caia chuva, para transbordar apenas
barragens cheias de l?grimas dos que choram em v?o!

A land is built from concrete.
And from the dream grown, disappointment is harvested!
Let the rain fall, and allow the reservoirs
filled with the tears of those who cry in vain to overflow!

Different approaches to tourism were also portrayed in several texts, such as that of Let?cia Varela, written in Galician and entitled ?Rel?gio do Tempo? (Time Clock). The possible extinction of Cape Verdean Creole was alluded to in the pieces by?Nani Delgado, ?N?o Vou Ficar? (I Will Not Stay), and by Ary Rodrigues, ?Um Povo Sempre Escravo? (A Nation Forever A Slave), which also talks about the country's economic growth and the influences of China.

Carla Gon?alves tells the story of an anthropologist and researcher who, in 2090, finds the book ?A Morabeza das Ilhas Crioulas' (The Morabeza of the Creole Islands), which has a ?clear cover that features stunningly beautiful white dunes; beautiful moraines and flowers with mountains towering in the background?, causing him to search for the meaning of ?morabeza?. He travels to the islands; when he arrives, however, the last remaining inhabitant says ?N?o h? mais Cabo Verde? (Cape Verde is no more):

Eis que Nh? Chico lhe responde num ingl?s rudimentar: Morabeza era a nossa ess?ncia, a m?sica, a saudade. Morabeza eram as nossas crioulas, uma diferente da outra, mas todas ?nicas. Morabeza eram as nossas praias de areias brancas e negras, as montanhas fortes e imponentes, a simpatia e acolhimento. Morabeza eram as flores, a diversidade cultural, a dan?a. Morabeza era aquilo que nos distinguia, que nos fazia ?nicos. Mas isso acabou e n?o h? mais aquele Cabo Verde?

Nho Chico spoke to him in broken English: Morabeza meant our essence, our music, our desires. Morabeza meant our creole women, each one different from the others, all unique. Morabeza meant our beaches covered in black and white sands, our strong, imposing mountains, our friendliness and hospitality. Morabeza meant flowers, cultural diversity, dance. Morabeza was what distinguished us, what made ??us unique. But now it's over and Cape Verde is no more?

?Someone has to be killed, and that's your task?, states the second challenge, which encourages the use of fast-paced prose to deliver crime, action and lots of gore.

From the boss murdered by an indignant ex-employee, the beautiful brunette who succumbed to the poison of a Loxosceles anomala spider, the ?Grande Mist?rio da Boneca Assassina? (The Mystery of the Murdered Doll), to the crime of passion and the classic butler mystery, but there was still room for a coup d'?tat from the revolutionaries, and for the introduction of the movement of the ?indignados? in Cape Verde, as Suruk Rodrigues wrote in the story of Zeca:

Zeca sofria com persegui??o pol?tica dos novos tempos, que poucos entendem, ou seja, na rua era bandido, na escola era drogado, e n?o conseguia bolsas de estudo, est?gio, trabalho ou coisa melhor. Arquitectou com genialidade o movimento dos indignados de Soncent com sede e ac??o no Mindelo, que no m?s de Julho de 2012 vinha a ocupar as manchetes dos jornais neoliberais numa dura persegui??o aos ?fascistas? e entre eles o pai da sua amada.

Zeca suffered from a newfound political persecution, which few understood. In other words, he was a criminal in the street, a drug addict in school, and he couldn't get scholarships, an internship, work or anything better. He had the brilliant idea of starting the movement of the outraged of Soncent, based in Mindelo. In July 2012 he came to be in the headlines of neoliberal newspapers in a stringent persecution of ?fascists?: among them, the father of his beloved.

He ends up being stabbed in the back by his future father-in-law in a public square, in full view of everyone.

Who killed Eva?

More crime to inspire the authors, but this time the challenge profiles the suspects of the murder of Eva Sequeira, a fifty-something-year-old wealthy widow who was found dead in her mansion.

Everyday life in Cape Verde. Photo by Nuno Lobito copyright Demotix (12/02/2008)

Everyday life in Cape Verde. Photo by Nuno Lobito copyright Demotix (12/02/2008)

The suspects include ?Eva's stepdaughter, who she never got on well with?, the ?retired doctor who had been in love with Eva since childhood (although it was never reciprocated)?, the ?young, good-looking stranger?, the ?butler's son who was devoted to C?rmen [the stepdaughter]?, and Eva's best friend:

No final do interrogat?rio, o investigador Nataniel Borges prendeu dois suspeitos sob acusa??o de cumplicidade na morte da senhora Eva Sequeira. Quem foi para a cadeia? Quais os motivos que os levaram a cometer t?o horrendo crime?

At the end of the interrogations Detective Nataniel Borges arrested two suspects on the grounds of involvement in Eva Sequeira's murder. Who was sent to jail? What forced them to commit such a horrendous crime?

The story with the most views, written by Margareth Lima, blamed Eva's best friend for committing a crime of passion:

?eu amei aquela vadia desde o dia em que a conheci. Sofria cada vez que a via com outro, meu ?nico conforto era a exist?ncia de outra pessoa que ela ignorava o amor. E justo quando ganho coragem e me declaro ela pede desculpas dizendo que s? me queria como amiga. Queria ficar com esse imbecil [o m?dico aposentado], porque era seu Ad?o. Mereceu morrer sem disfrutar do seu Ad?o.

I loved that bitch from the day I met her. I couldn't bear seeing her with other people. My only comfort was the existence of another person whose love she ignored. And just when I plucked up the courage to admit my love for her, she apologised saying she just wanted to be friends. She wanted to stay with that prick [the retired doctor] because he was her Adam. She deserved to die without enjoying her Adam.

Three days and a farewell

What would you do if you were told that you had only three days left to live?

The repentence of someone who only ever knew how to be ?a vile executioner, an opportunist and often sadistic for power?: he is taken door to door to visit those he owes apologies to for his behaviour in life.

A woman from Santo Ant?o. Photo by Julien Lagarde on Flickr (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

A woman from Santo Ant?o. Photo by Julien Lagarde on Flickr (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

The ?poet?, in ?Quando fui morrer? (When I went to Die),? ?[she hurried] to condense [her] life for her family and closest friends? in an all-night celebration.

Vanda wanted to fulfil the dream she had beyond her Creole life: to see the snow. She ends up in the Swiss Alps with her eyes closed, a smile on her lips and a heart full to bursting.

While the ?bride??decided to block all social networking sites before she died (?I never liked the idea of seeing dead people on Facebook.?), Vitoria, the character in Bolivian Margareth Lima's winning piece, took advantage of the social network to arrange a huge birthday and farewell party with ?family, former classmates, teachers, workmates, friends, and even enemies?. She was the only one who had a reversible death, as at the end of the story we find out that the results of the medical tests were not in fact hers.

And thus ended the first creative writing competition launched exclusively by a blog and promoted through Facebook, sowing the seeds for ?changes in writing habits and routines that can put down their roots and become even more developed with the passage of time?.

Doing A Window Replacement? You Need To Know This | welcome ...

What you are about to read is an authoritative article on roof cleaners brisbane, and we urge you to verify it just so you will find out, first hand. There was a time when we knew absolutely nothing on the matter, but that was a long time ago. If you want outside help that is up to you, but as for us we like to be more hands on. The simple reason in our case is we want things to be right, and we are not always so comfortable with lack of involvement. Nevertheless, you are about to read and learn more, and then you can explore those points and strategies that apply to your situation the most. Learn as you go and have patience, and we are confident the following will help you. If you want to reduce your fuel bills and also make your home look great, window replacement may be the next step for you. Replacing your windows is a great idea if you want to increase the market value of your home, lower your energy costs or feel cozier in the cold months. They can also make you feel better about your house, especially if you choose a style of windows that you really like. Replacing windows, however, can be a costly and time-consuming endeavor, so you want to be sure you know exactly what you?re getting into before you begin. Many homeowners like the idea of handling window replacement themselves; unless you?re a real DIYer, however, you may be better off hiring a qualified contractor instead. If you make any mistakes, you can do damage to the windows or frames and then it will have cost you rather than saved you money. Time is another factor that must always be calculated when considering an ambitious home improvement job. Choosing the right company or contractor, on the other hand, presents a different set of challenges. To begin with, don?t even make an appointment with a contractor who wants to charge you for just looking at your house; you should at least get a free estimate. Ask your friends, relatives and local acquaintances for recommendations, as this is the best way to find a good contractor. You may also be able to find reviews of contractors or window replacement companies online. Well, we hope you are duly impressed with just this little bit about brisbane roof cleaners. To make things even better, you just need to push the envelope a little bit by discovering more beyond this article. We know or at least believe that will have a better feeling for things once you get through this. There are tremendous benefits to be had once you reach that particular place. We all want to have as much control as possible, even though we know we cannot control everything, but still ? knowledge lets you be in a position to respond better to events. It?s important to get replacement windows that improve your home aesthetically as well as energy-wise. Windows aren?t only for insulation, they should be considered as decorative as well, so consider how they?ll go with the rest of your home and accessories. If you have, for example a 19th Century (or even older) home with a homey fireplace and antique furniture, you?d want windows that fit with this look. A more modern home would naturally look better with contemporary windows. Also keep in mind that the better everything in your home looks, the higher its value if you ever want to put it on the market. Whether you?re buying replacement windows from a home improvement store, or dealing with a local contractor, make sure that you understand the warranty that comes with the windows and/or work. It?s important to know exactly what the warranty does and doesn?t cover, and naturally for what time period. One type of warranty even remains valid if ownership of the house is transferred, which would be a benefit you could certainly use to help you sell the house. The warranty is an important way to protect your investment, so it?s essential that it gives you thorough coverage when it comes to materials and/or workmanship. Replacing inefficient windows in your home can be the beginning of the end, when it comes to cutting the costs to heat and operate your home comfortably. This can be a financial gain where your house is concerned and produce a new environment inside your home. If you plan the job carefully, whether it?s a DIY project or one you?ll be hiring someone to do, it will be a decision you won?t regret.

The Pentagon is Investing Millions to Advance the Future of 3-D ...

President Obama?s nationwide push for innovation in manufacturing reaches across agencies from the National Science Foundation to the Department of Energy, and now it?s reaching all the way into the Pentagon where $60 million is being set aside for investment in 3-D printing technologies. The DoD will fund a network of agencies, academic institutions, and companies to build on 3-D printing tech with the overarching goal of building aerospace and weapons technology faster.

Of that $60 million, half will be allotted to researchers between now and fiscal 2014, with more than half of that--some $18.8 million--being handed over in fiscal 2012 alone. That means, adjusting for the usual bureaucratic waste, there should be somewhere between many and many-many millions spent to advance 3-D printing tech this year alone under a framework that will hopefully push for the meeting of meaningful benchmarks.

Three-dimensional printing (or additive manufacturing, or rapid prototyping) is of course a fairly nascent technology that nonetheless holds great promise. While private companies like Makerbot, Stratasys, and even Hewlett-Packard have pushed the boundaries of the technology by developing less-expensive and more accessible printing systems to more people, the industry on the whole hasn?t really benefitted from a huge injection of investment or a meaningful mandate from a body like the DoD--one that, when it puts its mind and money to something, can actually enable technological leaps forward.

The 3-D printing industry was already doing fine--some analysts expect it to grow to $3.1 billion by 2016--but a little help from Uncle Sam can?t hurt. If you or your academic institution/non-profit organization thinks it can add some expertise to the pilot program, the Pentagon is taking proposals until June 14.

LG LS970 superphone rumored: Krait quad-core, 2GB RAM, LTE and 13MP camera

Not to be outdone by its Korean rival, LG's reportedly preparing a potent new phone with some of Qualcomm's latest SoC hardware. According to BriefMobile's leak, it'll pack an LTE-friendly MDM9615 alongside the Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM -- something LG has already announced for its Optimus LTE2. A 2,1000 mAh battery will apparently power the 4.67-inch 1280 x 768 LCD display, while a Sony-matching 13-megapixel camera will face out the back. The leak -- which includes the decidedly abstract photo above -- reckons the LTE slab will arrive on Sprint, which tallies with the LS970 model number. We're cautiously holding out for something more official soon -- perhaps once the Now Network's flipped that 4G switch.

President Obama's Gay-Marriage Support: Perez Hilton Weighs In

'I almost don't want to applaud him too much, because I wish he would have done this a long time ago,' blogger tells MTV News.

continues to be a hot topic of conversation. Just about everyone has an opinion on the issue, including Hollywood's movers and shakers.

With all the overwhelming enthusiasm for the president's announcement, there is also cautious optimism on the subject, given the issue's continued hot-button status in pop culture, as well as around the nation. Perez Hilton is a public figure who counts himself among the cautiously optimistic, mostly because the issue is so loaded and political.

"It was definitely happy news, but I almost don't want to applaud him too much, because I wish he would have done this a long time ago," Hilton told MTV News. "Having said that, it's better that he did it than not. He could have waited until after the election. However, it's clearly a calculated move in that he felt confident that this won't hurt his chances at getting re-elected, and that's why he did it."

Hilton went on to say that he will happily applaud the president for his actions, but not too loudly.

"He's still playing a [political] game, it is what it is, and it's still something that is positive and a step in the right direction," he said. "I think it's ultimately a self-defeating fight, because gay marriage is a given. It's going to happen, it's just a question of how soon and, of course, as a gay man and someone who believes in equal rights for all, I would rather it happen sooner rather than later."

Speaking to the involvement of Hollywood — and, more specifically, the news that "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy announced Thursday (May 10) his plans to host a fundraiser for Obama during his visit to Los Angeles — Hilton emphasized the fact that same-sex marriage is an issue that everyone should be talking about and aware of, not just celebrities.

"I think Hollywood is great — I'm part of it — but I also feel like same-sex marriage and quality is an issue that is important everywhere," he said. "I think an everyday person can be just as or more effective in creating change than celebrities. It is important to have people in Hollywood to talk about it, important for people to be out of the closet, important to have represented in the media, but it's just as powerful for everybody to do their part. There are a lot more famous people than non-famous people.

"Obviously, I think [Obama] has done great work," Hilton continued. "My biggest wish for this country is in 20 years we have a viable at least four-party system. People need more options than just a Democratic candidate and a Republican candidate. I wish we had four great candidates from different parties to choose from. It's time to change the way things work. It's been this way for so long. It needs to evolve and grow.

Ninth Circuit Can't Order VA Mental Health Fixes | Health and Fitness

Mon May 7, 2012 11:57pm EDT

The Ninth Circuit can?t order a major overhaul of the VA?s mental health care system.

A group of 11 appeals court judges reached this conclusion Monday, affirmatively overruling a May 2011 decision stating otherwise. A three-judge panel of the Ninth Circuit had originally ordered the Department of Veterans Affairs to institute drastic mental health care reforms.

But on reconsideration, the Ninth Circuit has decided it simply does not have the jurisdiction to order such sweeping reforms.

The underlying lawsuit was brought by two veterans? groups seeking better treatment for their members. The VA?s mental health care system has been described as incompetent and is often blamed for the large number of veteran suicides. It often takes weeks to get a referral.

Unfortunately, the Ninth Circuit was not the proper place to bring this sort of claim, the panel held. Federal courts and special adjudicative bodies can only hear those cases that Congress has given them authority to hear. This authority is rooted in federal statutes.

As the panel explained, federal statutes give exclusive jurisdiction over veterans benefits claims to the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The Ninth Circuit therefore can?t order changes to the VA?s mental health care system.

Despite this ruling, plaintiffs are not without recourse. They can either re-file the lawsuit in the proper venue, or they can petition Congress. Given that it took five years to even get to this point, asking Congress to reform the VA?s mental health care system is probably their best bet.

President Obama?s advantage on national security marks the first time in decades a Democratic candidate has had such an edge. DC Decoder?s Liz Marlantes explains.

That's one of the details tucked in thousands of pages of documents that were seized in last year's Navy SEAL raid.?West Point?s Center for Combating Terrorism (CTC) released a study of 17 declassified documents today, offering a window into Mr. bin Laden?s views.

The report notes that one of ?the most compelling? stories to come out of the declassified documents is bin Laden?s struggle to rein in Al Qaeda affiliates, and keep his intended message and branding on track.

?I plan to release a statement [announcing] that we are starting a new phase to correct [the mistakes] we made; in so doing, we shall reclaim, God willing, the trust of a large segment of those who lost their trust in the Jihadis,? bin Laden wrote in 2010.

The CTC report notes that though bin Laden publicly condemned the West, focusing on the repression and injustices exacted on Muslims by countries like the US, his private correspondence reveals that he was particularly pained by domestic jihadi attacks on Muslims.

His frustration may have even led bin Laden to consider rebranding his Al Qaeda movement as a whole. One letter by an unknown author suggests a list of potential names?(see English translated document?# 0000009).?Some of the proposed options are aimed at making followers of Islam feel more included in the organization.

But pithy they are not:

*?Tanthim al-Jihadi li-tawhid al-Umma wa-inkathiha, which means Jihad Organization for Unification and Rescue of the Nation,

* Tanthim al-Jihadi litahrir al-aksa wa-tawhid al-Umma, or Jihad Organization to Liberate Al-Aqsa and Unify the Nation,

* Hizb tawhid al-Umma al-Islamiya, Islamic Nation Unification Party.

Damage control was an apparent concern for the organization that has little oversight on an operational level with affiliates and those simply inspired by Al Qaeda's work. In response to a letter from Al Shabab leadership in Somalia expressing interest in identifying themselves as an Al Qaeda affiliate, bin Laden wrote, "If asked, it would be better to say there is a relationship with al-Qaida, which is simply a brotherly Islamic connection, and nothing more," according to the United Press International.

"Rather than a source of strength, [bin Laden] was burdened by what he viewed the incompetence of the 'affiliates,' including their lack of political acumen to win public support ... and their poorly planned operations which resulted in the unnecessary deaths of thousands of Muslims," reads the CTC report. Bin Laden was apparently disappointed by affiliate group ISI/AQI's arbitrary attacks on Shi?ite civilians, and warned other affiliates not to commit the same mistakes.

Bin Laden feared the frequency of civilian deaths that often occurred as ?collateral damage? in regional attacks were causing the Muslim populace to lose sympathy with the movement ??particularly when these deaths were ?exploited by the enemy,? bin Laden wrote, presumably referring to Western media and governments. He also indicated a desire to create an Al Qaeda Central, a term pulled, ironically, from Western media, to maintain greater oversight of affiliate groups.

Documents also reveal that in light of the Arab Spring ? something bin Laden viewed positively ? he wanted to focus more attention on media and outreach. In part, he hoped to rouse those who hadn?t yet rebelled against their rulers to do so, but he also acknowledged the important role media plays, as ?a [principle] element of the battle.? He expressed an interest in creating an Al Qaeda media outlet that could inform more mainstream Muslims about jihad, and perhaps spark their interest in the movement.

Faced with Breivik's unflinching account, Norway surprises world with its civility

A reporter covering Anders Behring Breivik's trial marvels at the degree of civility Norwegians have shown him, considering the brutality of the July 2011 terror attacks and his lack of remorse.

In the first two weeks of Anders Behring Breivik's trial, the Norwegian man reiterated his conviction that he did the right thing when he killed 77 people on July 22, 2011 ? even if it meant shooting unarmed Labor party youth members as young as 14 trapped on an island or bombing government buildings in Oslo. Those killed were??legitimate political targets,? he said.

The attacks were ?gruesome but necessary" for preventing Labor from continuing to undermine Norwegian society with its lenient immigration policies, Mr. Breivik said. The party had betrayed the country by promoting the Islamic colonization of Norway and ipso facto the ethnic cleansing of indigenous Norwegians. He would do it all again, he said.?

International onlookers have been shocked to see how civil the whole trial is proceeding, given the scale and brutality of his crimes ? together they are?the worst national tragedy the country has experienced since World War II ??and Breivik's lack of remorse.?

On April 16, the first day of the 10-week trial, a lineup of prosecutors, forensic psychiatrists, and the legal counsel for the victims all approached Breivik in court to shake his hand. Wearing a suit and neatly trimmed beard, he politely extended his right hand to greet them. Outside, people lined up orderly to enter Oslo District Court. There was not a single sign denouncing him, nor any banners calling for the death penalty.

On the second day of the trial, he was allowed to begin his six-day testimony of what happened in the years leading up to the attack, including his preparation for that day. At the end of the first week he recounted, in chilling detail, of how, after packing a ham and cheese sandwich that morning, he shot and killed 69 people at the Labor party youth summer camp on Ut?ya with a Glock pistol and Ruger semi-automatic rifle.

If this all sounds surreal, that?s because it is.?

It is surreal to see a well-dressed upper class man sit in a court and calmly explain how he killed Norwegians to prevent Norway?s demise. It?s incomprehensible to hear how a man, who supposedly had all the economic means and generous provisions of a cradle-to-grave welfare system, could turn into Norway?s most notorious killer in modern times. And that is part of what scares Norwegians: the thought that he is one of them.?

Despite the atrocity of his crimes and his behavior, Norwegians still want to see him get a fair trial. But that means?he has a legal right to explain himself in court, even if there is a risk that he spreads his propaganda. The trial is also key in determining Breivik's sanity, which is at the crux of this case. The prosecution even defended his right to keep reading from his prepared speech on his first day of testimony in spite of protests from the legal counsel for the victims, who were offended by his one-hour long monologue.?

ISS ready for new zero-g experiments, students asked to float ideas

ISS-zero-g-student-space-experiments

Those secret space experiments you've been scheming? They may never happen if you try to go it alone. Fortunately, the space science group NCESSE can get you a ride, having started the countdown for its fifth wave of microgravity experiments aboard the International Space Station. US and international students from grade 5 up to university level can submit ideas until September 12th, 2012, with final culling by December 7. The mini-labs -- which can include experiments in seed germination or crystal growth, for example -- are set to be ferried aboard a SpaceX flight in April 2013. Three similar missions have flown nearly 60 student experiments already, with a fourth set as soon as the Falcon 9 craft deigns to go. If you've got a flat-out good idea being prevented by big G, hit the source to see how you could get it fired off to the ISS.
