Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx review

Most of today's smartphones, especially those of the LTE-enabled persuasion, have earned a bad rap for exceptionally bad battery life, with large displays and hungry radios that suck the juice out faster than a three year-old can down a CapriSun. The race to construct the thinnest phones on the market doesn't help much either, since whittling down handsets results in less space for generously sized battery packs. The Motorola Droid RAZR is currently the slimmest phone this side of the Pacific, offering a thickness of 7.1mm at its thinnest end, and the title likely won't hold for long as new phones like the Huawei Ascend P1 S aim to knock the RAZR off its throne. But at what point do we stand up and insist on adding a little extra heft for the sake of having a bigger battery?

Enter the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx. A mere two months after its predecessor was released on Verizon, this new contender came around to challenge the battery life of every single next-gen phone we've ever used. Its back end has been filled out somewhat to make room for a bigger battery, but at 8.99mm, it's still slimmer than a huge number of competing handsets on the market today. So what makes the Maxx different from the RAZR? Is it worth paying $300 with a two-year commitment -- a $100 premium over its original? Read on to find out.

Afghan woman killed, apparently for bearing girl (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? An Afghan woman has been strangled to death, apparently by her husband, who was upset that she gave birth to a second daughter rather than the son he wanted, police said Monday.

It was the latest in a series of grisly examples of subjugation of women that have made headlines in Afghanistan in the past few months ? including a 15-year-old tortured and forced into prostitution by in-laws and a female rape victim who was imprisoned for adultery.

The episodes have raised the question of what will happen to the push for women's rights in Afghanistan as the international presence here shrinks along with the military drawdown. NATO forces are scheduled to pull out by the end of 2014.

In the 10 years since the ouster of the Taliban, great strides have been made for women in Afghanistan, with many attending school, working in offices and even sometimes marching in protests. But abuse and repression of women are still common, particularly in rural areas where women are still unlikely to set foot outside of the house without a burqa robe that covers them from head to toe.

The man in the latest case, Sher Mohammad, fled the Khanabad district in Kunduz province last week, about the time a neighbor found his 22-year-old wife dead in their house, said District Police Chief Sufi Habibullah. Medical examiners whom police brought to check the body said she had been strangled, Habibullah said.

The woman, named Estorai, had warned family members that her husband had repeatedly reproached her for giving birth to a daughter rather than a son and had threatened to kill her if it happened again, said Provincial women's affairs chief Nadira Ghya, who traveled to Khanabad to deal with the case. Estorai gave birth to her second daughter between two and three months ago, Ghya said. Officials did not have a family name for either Sher Mohammad or Estorai.

Police took the man's mother into custody because she appears to have collaborated in a plot to kill her daughter-in-law, Habibullah said. Ghya, who visited the man's mother in jail, said that she swears that Estorai committed suicide by hanging. Police said they found no rope and no evidence of hanging from the woman's wounds.

Boy babies are traditionally prized much more highly than girls in Afghanistan, where a son means a breadwinner and a daughter is seen as a drain on the family until she is married off. Even so, a murder over the gender of a baby would be rare and shocking if proved true.

The U.S. Embassy issued a statement Monday praising the Afghan government for recent declarations supporting women's rights in the wake of the latest abuse cases that have garnered media attention.

"The rights of women cannot be relegated to the margins of international affairs, as this issue is at the core of our national security and the security of people everywhere," the statement said. It did not address the killing of the young woman in Kunduz.

Hazanavicius wins Directors Guild award for 'The Artist'

By msnbc.com news services

Michel Hazanavicius, director of "The Artist", was named the year's best feature film director by the Directors Guild of America on Saturday, further positioning the silent movie-era romance as a frontrunner for Oscars.

The movie about a fading star whose career is eclipsed by the woman he loves just as talkies are putting an end to silent pictures has been a critical darling throughout the Hollywood's current awards season.

"This is really touching and moving for me," said French director Hazanavicius upon accepting his award at the Grand Ballroom adjacent to the Kodak Theatre where the Oscars, the film industry's highest honors, will be given out on February 26.

"It's maybe the highest recognition I could hope for," he said.

The DGA Awards are a key indicator of who may win Academy Awards next month because only six times since the DGA began handing out annual honors in 1948 has the its winner failed to also be named best director by Oscar voters.

More important, there is a long history among members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out the Oscars, to give their Academy Award for best film to the movie made by the winner of best director.

The next stop in the race for Oscars is Sunday's Screen Actors Guild awards in Los Angeles where "The Artist" will look to extend its streak of victories, including a Golden Globe for best film musical or comedy and honors from critics groups.

The DGA also gives out other awards, including one for best film documentary, which went to James Marsh for "Project Nim."

Among TV award winners, Patty Jenkins was given the DGA trophy for best drama series for the pilot episode of "The Killing" and Robert B. Weide took home the DGA award for best comedy series for an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Readers Write: Homeownership isn't all bad ? or good; EU is a model for peace

Letters to the Editor for the weekly issue of January 30, 2011: One reader takes issue with an op-ed's reasoning on why Americans should rent, not buy. Another points out that the global reduction in war is largely attributable to the union of previous enemies in Europe.

Homeownership isn't all bad

Justin Martin's Jan. 16 commentary "Why I rent, despite low mortgage rates" is engaging. On the one hand, his diagnosis of the continued dismal state of the housing market is spot on, where renting certainly represents a safe option for a host of persons.

On the other hand, it does not follow that a stagnant housing market and unsettled employment situation can be brought together so breezily. The vast majority of workers can't set out for other countries for new work. Even within the United States, being a renter doesn't equate with being able to "easily move around."

Historically, a home does appreciate in value over time, and it also proves useful to those who can afford one and go into the process clear-eyed. Granted, there are risks. But there are risks to renters as well. There are risks anytime one places a bet on financial return.

There is really no need to force a dichotomy where one doesn't exist. Buying a house isn't a "spending binge." And being a renter isn't a miracle salve for complex economic woes.

EU as model for peace

In the Dec. 26 issue, two articles deal with the global reduction in war and violence:?"Wars grind on; but statistically, violence declines" and?"Are we getting better?" The latter features an interview with Harvard professor Steven Pinker about his new book "The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined."

Neither, however, mentions a major reason for the reduction in the frequency and magnitude of war, namely, that the nations responsible for one of history's greatest carnages, particularly France and Germany, have been, since the end of World War II, bound together with others in an arrangement of shared sovereignty.

Despite the challenges currently facing the European Union over its common currency and other issues, it still constitutes the closest thing we have on the planet to Immanuel Kant's system of "perpetual peace." Accession to the EU also ensures collaborative resolution of domestic and cross-border conflicts. And it is an example to states in other regions of the world.

These are among the core reasons why nations have increasingly discovered that cooperation and collaboration are the optimal ways forward in addressing complex problems that defy the efforts of any one nation to deal with on its own.

Still, this may not be enough to stop the occasional martyr from attempting to destroy the utility of this model by strapping on an explosive device and detonating it in some city center. Obviously, we still have our work cut out for us!

The Warrior Beat | Investing in UH football | UH football, University of ...

We all know someone who wants to let you know about a great investment. No obligations. Honest. Just a little of your time.

Punahou running back Steven Lakalaka and Kamehameha safety Taylor Taliulu listened, and yesterday both decided to invest in the Warrior plan. In doing so, they rescinded pledges to Pac-12 schools ? Lakalaka to UCLA, Taliulu to Washington State.

"Steven and I are really good friends," Taliulu said. "We were talking about it. We thought it would be cool to show everyone we're serious about Hawaii football. We can change this place around."

Taliulu had been set on going away. After completing his UH trip yesterday, he evaluated his offers.

"I felt home would be the best place for me to get a scholarship and try to be the best player I can be," Taliulu said. "I think coach Chow has a really good coaching staff. I feel I can gain the best knowledge from them."

Lakalaka expressed an interest in medicine. During his visit, Chow and assistant coach Keith Uperesa took Lakalaka to the John Burns Medical School. They met with professors and other students.

"That meant a lot," Lakalaka said.

The message: Many of the ?things on the mainland can be found in Hawaii.

Lakalaka and Taliulu then discussed their situation.

"We talked about USC and UCLA, and their traditions," Lakalaka said. "Somebody had to start it. We wanted to be part of starting a tradition."

Gaborik's trick leads Team Chara to All-Star win (AP)

OTTAWA ? Marian Gaborik made New York Rangers teammate Henrik Lundqvist pay for not selecting him to play for Daniel Alfredsson's team in the NHL All-Star game.

Gaborik beat Lundqvist twice in the first period, finished with three goals and an assist, and earned MVP honors in leading Team Chara to a 12-9 win over Team Alfredsson on Sunday.

Tim Thomas made 18 saves in the final period, and extended his record by winning his fourth All-Star game.

Chara, with the eventual winning goal, Marian Hossa and Corey Perry broke the game open by scoring three times in a span of 1:22 that put their club ahead 11-8 with 6:34 remaining.

Despite the loss, Alfredsson rewarded his hometown fans by leading his team with two goals and an assist. The Senators captain also hinted afterward that he is considering coming back for one more season.

In an interview broadcast on the arena's scoreboard, Alfredsson was asked about his future.

With a smile on his face, and fans cheering his name, Alfredsson said: "Fifty percent yes, and my wife's going to have to decide the other 50."

Henrik Sedin had a goal and two assists for Team Alfredsson.

Gaborik became the 16th player to score at least three goals ? one short of matching the record ? in the All-Star game, and first since Rick Nash had three in 2008.

The outcome was decided in the final period, in which Team Chara outscored Team Alfredsson 6-3.

Hossa broke an 8-8 tie by scoring on a partial breakaway after being set up by Pavel Datsyuk with 7:56 left. Settling the puck, Hossa stopped in front and then backhanded a shot past Brian Elliott.

Chara gave his club a 10-8 lead when Gaborik fed him a perfect pass into the middle for a snap shot past Elliott.

For Team Chara, Hossa and Jarome Iginla had a goal and two assists, and Joffrey Lupul scored twice.

Daniel Sedin, John Tavares, Jason Pominville and Milan Michalek had a goal and assist each for Team Alfredsson.

Team Chara got off to a fast start, building a 3-0 lead on Gaborik's second goal 9:51 in. The club was so dominant that it was leading 2-0 before Alfredsson's team got off its first shot.

Gaborik certainly enjoyed getting the best of Lundqvist. After scoring his first goal on a give-and-go with Datsyuk, Gaborik circled the net dropped to one knee and pointed his stick at Lundqvist while pumping his fist.

Lundqvist jokingly lamented about being beaten three times on eight shots, including twice by his Rangers teammate.

"There's been a lot of trash talk, but it feels like it's game over already," said Lundqvist, who was wearing a microphone during the opening period.

Lundqvist was Alfredsson's assistant captain, and had a hand in the team's drafting philosophy on Thursday.

Team Alfredsson rallied to tie the game at 3 before the first period was over. But they didn't get their first ? and only lead ? until Alfredsson scored twice during a 1:31 span to put his team up 6-5 with just under four minutes left in the second.

His first goal came on a great individual effort in which Alfredsson, dragging the puck behind him, split defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Ryan Suter, and flipped a shot that sneaked inside the right post to beat goalie Carey Price.

Alfredsson's second goal came on a wonderful passing play courtesy of Daniel and Henrik Sedin, whom Alfredsson was looking forward to play with when he drafted the twins. Henrik Sedin drove up the left wing, fed a pass through the crease to his twin brother, who then redirected to the high slot, where Alfredsson slapped it home.

Price allowed three goals on 14 shots, and had lamented the All-Star game's lack of defense during the first intermission.

"I feel like being a lamb getting led to slaughter," Price said. "I'm must be holding on for the ride today and hope I don't get lit up too bad."

Alfredsson nearly had a third goal nine minutes into third period, when he one-timed a shot off the left post

The game was missing the NHL's most high-profile stars in Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. Crosby has been limited to playing just eight games this season as a result of a concussion, and has also been diagnosed with a neck injury, making it unclear when or if he will play at all this season.

Ovechkin backed out last week after the NHL suspended him three games for an illegal hit.

The game featured 17 first-time All-Stars, 10 playing on Team Alfredsson. Team Chara's roster had the edge over Team Alfredsson in combined games played (10,227-8,425, not including goalies), career goals (2,850-2,286) and career points (7,394-6,164).

Steven Stamkos was awarded a penalty shot with 3:27 left in the first period after he was tripped up by Dion Phaneuf.

On the penalty shot, Stamkos ? who leads the NHL with 32 goals ? attempted the same spin-around move he used to beat Price in the skills competition on Saturday night. Howard didn't bite on Sunday, holding his ground and hugging the post to stop Stamkos' attempt.

It was the second penalty shot taken in an All-Star game. The other was last year in at Raleigh, N.C., when Colorado's Matt Duchene was stopped by Lundqvist.

Bayern Munich apologizes for hoax player signing

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:01 p.m. ET Jan. 27, 2012

MUNICH (AP) -Bayern Munich apologized Friday for tricking fans over a "spectacular new signing" after supporters reacted angrily to a publicity stunt in which the Bundesliga leaders sought to increase their fanbase on Facebook.

Bayern said on its website that it had taken fans' numerous comments into account to determine that many were "very angry" with the club.

"We're sorry. But it wasn't our intention to disappoint you with the new FC Bayern app," Bayern said. "Rather, we wanted to put the focus on you with this action, to show how important each fan is for Bayern Munich."

Fans had been directed to Facebook to watch the announcement of a new striker Thursday, and were made to "like" Bayern's page in order to view the proceedings.

Instead of learning the identity of striker Mario Gomez's backup, fans were then presented with an app called "The New FCB Star."

"Dear fans, you probably already noticed that we did not sign a new player. This app is for our fans to show the importance of you for our club," the club had said. "Each Bayern fan is the 'spectacular new signing,' our 12th man!"

Thousands of fans reacted negatively, leaving uncomplimentary comments on the club's Facebook page - even though Bayern described the whole thing as "a bit of fun for our fans."

Bayern's own goal was compounded when Munich's TZ newspaper reported that the club had warned its players about publishing photos or sharing information on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, with an outright ban coming into effect within 90 minutes of a game.

The warning came after Bayern defender Breno complained on Twitter of being forced to play in the reserve team, and midfielder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk posted footage of Uli Hoeness' 60th birthday party on YouTube and a picture of the Bayern dressing room before a game.

"The players know that they need to cut it down," Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes told Bild on Thursday - the day of Bayern's "spectacular new signing."

"It's not on that you take photos or allow photos be taken before a game - like Tymoshchuk - and put them on the internet. It's tomfoolery, it's unprofessional."

Heynckes said Friday that the timing and manner of Bayern's publicity stunt "weren't quite so fortunate," especially after the 3-1 loss at Borussia Moenchengladbach last weekend.

"If we had won 4-0 in Moenchengladbach and it had been presented in a different manner, then it would have been somewhat more successful," Heynckes said.

Acupuncture May Boost Pregnancy Success Rates (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Jan. 27 (HealthDay News) -- When a couple is trying to have a baby and can't, it can be emotionally and financially draining. But help may be available in an unexpected form: acupuncture.

Medical experts believe that this ancient therapy from China, which involves placing numerous thin needles at certain points in the body, can help improve fertility in both men and women.

"Acupuncture has been around for almost 3,000 years. It's safe and there are no bad side effects from it," explained Dr. Lisa Lilienfield, a family practice and pain management specialist at the Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine in McLean, Va. "It may not be the only thing that is done in isolation to treat infertility, but it helps get the body primed and maximizes the potential effects of fertility treatments."

Dr. Jamie Grifo, director of the New York University Fertility Center and director of the division of reproductive endocrinology at the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, said that "it's not a panacea, but acupuncture does help some patients have better success."

"It's one non-traditional modality to help manage the stress of infertility, and it does improve pregnancy rates and quality of life in some people," he said.

In addition to relieving stress, Lilienfield said that acupuncture can help increase a woman's fertility by improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus. This improved blood flow can help thicken the lining of the uterus, increasing the chances of conception.

It may also help correct problems with the body's neuroendocrine system. Acupuncture can help activate the brain to release hormones that will stimulate the ovaries, adrenal glands and other organs that are involved in reproduction, according to Lilienfield. Acupuncture's effect on the neuroendocrine system may also help infertile men by stimulating sperm production, she said.

Studies that have been done on acupuncture and fertility have had mixed results, with some showing benefits and others showing none. Grifo said the differing results may have something to do with the design of the studies. Two areas that appear to be more consistently helped by acupuncture treatments are in vitro fertilization and women who are infertile due to polycystic ovary syndrome.

Two studies -- one in Acupuncture in Medicine and the other in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation -- found a benefit when acupuncture was used on the day an embryo was transferred into a woman's uterus.

The study from the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation also found that women with polycystic ovary syndrome and men who had infertility issues with no known cause also benefitted from acupuncture.

The actual treatment session involves placing very thin needles at specific points in the body. In Chinese medicine, these points are believed to be areas where a person's "qi" (pronounced chee), or life force, is blocked, according to the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In Western medicine, it's believed that the needle placement may release the body's natural painkillers.

Acupuncture is commonly used to treat pain, such as back pain, headache and menstrual cramps, according to the center.

Lilienfield said that acupuncture treatment costs vary, depending on where someone lives and the training of the practitioner. In her center, a treatment costs about $135, and most people receive six to eight treatments for infertility, she said. Insurance reimbursement also varies, she noted, though many insurance companies will pay for acupuncture.

In general, someone younger than 35 is often advised to try to get pregnant for about a year before seeking treatment for infertility. "But, if you're anxious to get going, six months is a reasonable time to wait," Lilienfield said. And women older than 35 probably shouldn't wait more than six months, she added.

Grifo said he doesn't favor waiting that long to seek treatment. "If you are trying to get pregnant and struggling with it, you don't need to wait a year," he said. "And, if you're over 35, don't wait six months to get worked up if it's causing you distress."

Obama???s Education Pledges: Worthy Concepts, Sticky Implementation (ContributorNetwork)

President Obama spoke forcefully on education in his State of the Union last night. I just hope he means what he said and has the political support to follow through. These are the four points that provoked an immediate reaction:

* Promising to give schools the flexibility to teach with creativity and passion instead of teaching to the test is something parents and teachers have long wanted to hear. But how many educators are willing to admit they've been teaching to the test? How are schools going to get them to stop as long as the tests continue to proliferate and as long as merit pay proposals are tied to student performance?

* Having seen too many political manipulations involving threatened teacher layoffs, I have doubts about the President's commitment to give schools the resources to keep teachers on the job and reward the best. When every county employee was subject to furloughs in Montgomery County, Md., teachers demanded a free pass. When Baltimore was cutting back teacher jobs for supposed lack of funds, the city came up with a salary in excess of $200,000 for a new deputy superintendent. Instead of pouring more resources into schools when we already lead the nations in educational spending, we should stop doling out funds and instead work to ensure the money devoted to education is spent wisely.

* Changing the laws so that all students are required to stay in school until they graduate or turn 18 is an initiative long overdue. The social and economic costs of dropping out affect not only the dropouts themselves, but society at large. Those costs include 5 percent higher unemployment than the general population, higher rates of imprisonment, and an estimated $26 billion in lost tax revenues, according to a study discussed on Incipit Vita Nova.

* Demanding that colleges keep costs down and refusing to endlessly increase the monies spent on higher education is also a long overdue plan, but likely a hollow one. Profiteers in higher education have overtaken the traditional colleges. For-profit schools graduated an average of 22 percent of their enrollees in 2008-2009, while laying claim to some $24 billion in federal education funds. Congress has not found the strength to shut down this shameful industry and it's not likely to do so in the future thanks to the entrenched education lobby. President Obama's own words- "Higher education can't be a luxury -- it is an economic imperative that every family in America should be able to afford"- will be turned against him sooner than he realizes as parties accustomed to raking in big money extend their hands even further.

Newt Gingrich on Mitt Romney: He Thinks We're All Stupid!

The Florida Republican primary is less than a week away and the gloves are off.

Having been whomped in South Carolina, Mitt Romney came out firing in Monday night's Florida debate and has kept up the pressure on his GOP rival all week.

New pro-Romney ads are calling Gingrich a liar who's exaggerating loose ties to Ronald Reagan and drops names instead of touting his own policy credentials.

Newt lashed out at Mitt today for questioning his conservative values. Watch:

"This is the man who stood up the other night to question my credentials as a Reaganite? This is the kind of gall they have to think we are so stupid, and we are so timid," Gingrich said at an outdoor campaign event in Orlando, Florida.

Newt has slipped a bit in recent polls since his demonstrative win. Can he shift the momentum back his way when the candidates debate again tonight?

Steps You Should Take to Get Insurance ? Centired.com - For All ...

As young people grow up and start their own lives, they need to buy new things. Buying things can lead to having to buy insurance. If you buy a car, you will need to also buy auto insurance. If you buy a house, you will need to buy insurance. If you get married or have children, you will want to consider life insurance. There are all kinds of different insurance that we must all deal with in our lives. Finding a good deal on insurance from good insurance companies can be a challenge. It can get confusing, too, with all the different insurance coverage types and insurance companies and insurance policies. A lot of people are upset at how high the cost of insurance policies are. All insurance, though, can turn out to be an incredible and invaluable investment when accidents and losses happen. Insurance is something very important to invest in. Although insurance can be an expensive business, there are several things you can do to get the best deal on insurance and ensure you get the coverage you want in addition.

What insurance will do is protect you financially when accidents and losses occur. Having insurance is like a guarantee that you will receive some kind of financial compensation to help you through your problem. For example, if you get into a car accident, it is no secret that car repairs are extremely costly. If your car is insured, though, your car insurance company will pay for you to get your car fixed. If you buy a house and it floods, home insurance with flood coverage will pay for the damages caused by the flood.

When you are considering buying a car, you should know that it is a law to have car insurance. There are dozens and dozens of insurance companies out there that offer car insurance with all different types of coverage on your car. What you can do to find the best deal on auto insurance is to call around to various insurance companies that offer car insurance and ask for an insurance quote. An insurance quote is kind of like an estimate on the cost of what you will be spending on the insurance for a certain coverage. All you must do is supply that insurance company with some basic information about yourself and they can give you a price estimate, or an insurance quote, on your car and the coverage you want. Once you have gathered a few quotes from different companies, as long as they all support the services that you need, you will have the lowest costing insurance available right in front of you.

When you have chosen to go with a certain insurance company, you should ask about their insurance bundles. A lot of insurance companies will offer to give you car insurance, home insurance, and life insurance all through them. And since you are purchasing all of this insurance through one company, they will give you a discount. This is much better and more organized than purchasing insurance from three different insurance company.

Any insurance, whether it be car insurance, life insurance, liability insurance, or health insurance, will cost you per month. Every month you will pay an amount that guarantees you will be protected financially if you were to be in an accident or experienced losses. Steps You Should Take to Get Insurance

With little to show in Syria, Arab League turns to UN

The Arab League wants to raise Syria's violent crisis at the United Nations?? but it faces Russian reluctance.

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

Frustrated by months of failed efforts to mediate an end to Syria's violent crisis on its own, the Arab League is turning to the United Nations for help.

Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby and Qatari Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani wrote to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon requesting a meeting to discuss UN Security Council support for their peace plan, Reuters reports.?The Arab League's various efforts to mediate in Syria, including a monitoring mission that has been abandoned by six member states, have had little impact.

On Sunday, the Arab League leaders presented a peace plan to Damascus that called on President Bashar al-Assad to step down, transfer power to his deputy, and permit the formation of a unity government. Syrian Foreign Minister?Walid al Moualem responded that Syria rejected the plan and lambasted the league for "abandoning their role as the Arab League."

"We no longer want Arab solutions to the crisis," he said Tuesday, according to a separate Reuters report.?"Heading to the Security Council will be the third stage in their plan, and the only thing left is the last step of internationalization.??They can head to New York or to the moon. So long as we are not paying for their tickets it is none of our concern."

The observer mission, sent to Syria to monitor its implementation of a peace plan agreed to in November, was controversial from the start because of its leader's poor human rights record and its tight control by the Syrian government, which largely prevented observers from interacting with the opposition. Yesterday the six Gulf states began removing their 55 observers, saying the mission had been ineffective. Violence has continued since their arrival, with dozens of deaths.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Syria agreed to extend the mission by another month. The observers who left will be replaced by additional observers from the countries still participating.

Sarah Palin Says Chris Christie Has "Panties in a Wad" Over Newt Gingrich Surge

Sarah Palin has a way with words.

The 2008 V.P. nominee, who hasn't formally endorsed Newt Gingrich but still told people to vote for Newt in South Carolina and is clearly glad he won Saturday's primary, had some fun with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's reaction to Gingrich's win.

After Christie, a Romney supporter and surrogate, bashed Gingrich as an embarrassment to the Republican party, Palin stated, eloquently, that Chris just has his panties in a wad over his guy losing. Sarah's words, not ours. Watch:

Romney's Taxes Will Hurt Him (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Mitt Romney has released his tax records, reports Reuters. The records, from 2010 and 2011, indicate he is paying an average tax rate of about 14.5 percent over the two years. The reason the tax rate is far lower than the maximum income tax rate of 35 percent is that Romney's income is primarily from investments, which are taxed at a lesser rate. For both years combined, Romney will pay around $6.2 million on $42.5 million in income. His net worth is estimated at $190 million to $250 million.

Romney may have done himself a disservice by revealing he pays far less taxes than he would if his income came in the form of a wage or salary, as is the case for most Americans.

According to Businessweek, billionaire investor and philanthropist Warren Buffet is upset Congress allows investors like Romney to pay lower taxes than others:

"He makes his money the same way I make my money," Buffett said. "He makes money by moving around big bucks, not by straining his back or going to work and cleaning toilets or whatever it may be. He makes it shoving around money."

This news may be especially painful for Romney in that it taints his attacks against top challenger Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House who has received hefty payments from mortgage giant Freddie Mac. Romney is attacking Gingrich by insisting the former congressman received $1.8 million in dubious consulting fees while Freddie Mac harmed homeowners during the recession, reports The Washington Post.

When pitting corporate payments against corporate payments, it may be a good idea for Romney to tread lightly. While Gingrich may get some mud on his reputation, plenty will splatter back on Romney himself. While Romney may be desperate to regain the initiative and head off Gingrich's momentum before the Florida primary, it may backfire if he starts highlighting corporate ties and investments.

A group of researchers led by the Institute of Biotechnology and Biomedicine (IBB) and Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona (UAB) have achieved to quantify with precision the effect of protein aggregation on cell aging processes using as models the Escherichia coli bacteria and the molecule which triggers Alzheimer's disease. Scientists demonstrated that the effect can be predicted before it occurs. Protein aggregation is related to several diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases.

The research, published recently in the Journal of Molecular Biology, provides an extremely reliable system with which to model and quantify the effect of protein aggregation on the viability, division and aging of cells. It also aids in further understanding the natural evolution of proteins. According to Salvador Ventura, researcher at IBB and director of the research project, "it will serve to develop computer approximations to predict the effects aggregation has on cell aging, as well as to search for molecules that act as natural chaperones, highly conserved proteins which are present also in humans and which have the ability to reduce this effect in the bacteria".

Although it is widely accepted that bad folding and aggregation of proteins reduces the cell's ability to survive and reproduce, the damage caused had not been previously measured experimentally as precisely as it was in this research.

In previous studies scientists had verified that the expression of the Alzheimer's AB42 peptide in bacteria induces the process of protein aggregation. Now they have demonstrated that this effect is coded in the protein aggregation sequence and that it depends on intrinsic properties, not on a direct response from within the cell. This makes it possible to predict the effect. Scientists also demonstrated that damage caused to the bacteria is controlled by molecular chaperones, which reduce the tendency of proteins to aggregate and favour cell survival.

In addition to researchers from IBB and the UAB Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, participating in the project were scientists from the Biophysics Unit at CSIC-UPV, the University of the Basque Country, the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia and the Barcelona Centre for International Health Research.

Primary day at hand, SC voters have their say (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich collided Saturday in the South Carolina primary, the first Southern testing ground in the race for the Republican presidential nomination and historically a harbinger of the final outcome.

Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul rounded out the field in a campaign defined by its unpredictability.

There were 25 Republican National Convention delegates at stake, but political momentum was the real prize with the race to pick an opponent to President Barack Obama still in its early stages.

In all, more than $12 million was spent on television ads by the candidates and their allies in South Carolina, much of it on attacks designed to degrade the support of rivals.

Already, Romney and a group that supports him were on the air in next-up Florida with a significant ad campaign, more than $7 million combined to date. The state's primary is Jan. 31.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, swept into South Carolina 11 days ago as the favorite after being pronounced the winner of the lead-off Iowa caucuses, then cruising to victory in New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary.

But in the sometimes-surreal week that followed, he was stripped of his Iowa triumph ? Santorum holds the lead if not the win ? while former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman dropped out and endorsed Romney and Texas Rep. Rick Perry quit and backed Gingrich.

Romney responded awkwardly to questions about releasing his income tax returns, and about his investments in the Cayman Islands. Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, benefited from two well-received debate performances while grappling with allegations by an ex-wife that he had once asked her for an open marriage so he could keep his mistress.

By primary eve, Romney was speculating openly about a lengthy battle for the nomination rather than the quick knockout that had seemed within his grasp only days earlier.

One piece of primary day theater failed to materialize when the two men avoided crossing paths at Tommy's Ham House in Greenville, packed with partisans holding signs that read either "Romney" or "Newt 2012."

Romney rolled in earlier than expected, and had left by the time Gingrich arrived.

Santorum got a lift hours before the polls closed when the Iowa Republican Party declared him the winner of the caucuses on Jan. 3. Romney was pronounced the victor by eight votes initially, but on Thursday, party officials said a recount showed Santorum ahead by 34. Even so, they declared the outcome a tie.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, pinned his South Carolina hopes on a heavy turnout in parts of the state with large concentrations of social conservatives, the voters who carried him to his surprisingly strong showing in Iowa.

Paul had a modest campaign presence here after finishing third in Iowa and second in New Hampshire. His call to withdraw U.S. troops from around the world was a tough sell in a state dotted with military installations and home to many veterans.

As the first Southern primary, South Carolina has been a proving ground for Republican presidential hopefuls in recent years.

Since Ronald Reagan in 1980, every Republican contender who won the primary has gone on to capture the party's nomination.

Romney's stumbles began even before his New Hampshire primary victory, when he told one audience that he had worried earlier in his career about the possibility of being laid off.

He gave a somewhat rambling, noncommittal response in a debate in Myrtle Beach last Monday when asked if he would release his tax returns before the primary. The following day, he told reporters that because most of his earnings come from investments, he paid about 15 percent of his income in taxes, roughly half the rate paid by millions of middle-class wage-earners. A day later, aides confirmed that some of his millions are invested in the Cayman Islands, although they said he did not use the offshore accounts as a tax haven.

Asked again at a debate in North Charleston on Thursday about releasing his taxes, his answer was anything but succinct and the audience appeared to boo.

Gingrich benefited from a shift in strategy that recalled his approach when he briefly soared to the top of the polls in Iowa. At mid-week he began airing a television commercial that dropped all references to Romney and his other rivals, and contended that he was the only Republican who could defeat Obama.

It featured several seconds from the first debate in which the audience cheered as he accused Obama of having put more Americans on food stamps than any other president.

Nor did Gingrich flinch when ex-wife Marianne said in an interview on ABC that he had been unfaithful for years before their divorce in 1999, and asked him for an open marriage.

Asked about the accusation in the opening moments of the second debate of the week, he unleashed an attack on ABC and debate host CNN and accused the "liberal news media" of trying to help Obama by attacking Republicans. His ex-wife's account, he said, was untrue.

Jim Hamilton's World of Securities Regulation: UK Finance Minister ...

Transparency and market position reform of the derivatives markets must proceed deliberately based on rigorous impact assessments to fully understand the costs and benefits, said UK Finance Minister Mark Hoban in remarks to the London Stock Exchange. While greater transparency has clearly had a positive effect in equity markets, he noted, the same measures may not be directly transferrable to the derivatives markets.

Derivative markets are considerably less liquid than equity markets, he said, and extreme care is needed to ensure that transparency requirements are carefully designed to work for each asset class. For example, while the component bonds that make up Markit?s iBoxx bond indices are some of the most actively traded bonds in Europe, a review of over 9000 of these bonds revealed that only 52 percent actually traded at least once in a six month sample period in 2010.

The European Commission must also undertake a rigorous analysis when it comes to updating MiFID to reflect changes in the commodities market. He urged the Commission not to succumb to knee jerk reactions which may only serve to increase costs for EU citizens.

The Minister emphasized that it is vital to remember that the commodities derivatives market serves a critical economic function in allowing end users to mitigate commercial risk. That is why the Minister is skeptical about blanket position limits across all markets, while acknowledging that they have a role to play in defined circumstances. In his view, active position management by exchanges and authorities will be much more effective in tackling market abuse, and will also provide a more rigorous approach. He said that it is incorrect to think that blanket limits will enable governments to control prices, as some would seem to suggest.

More broadly, he urged the Commission to resist pressure to use the ongoing MiFID reforms to raise barriers against third countries seeking to trade with the EU. Across EU dossiers there has been an increasing and worrying tendency to try to implement strict equivalence or reciprocity provisions through EU legislation. The Minister cautioned that this approach could effectively close EU financial markets to third country firms.

For instance, it seems that no third country would meet the standards as set out under the current MiFID proposal. From the moment that it is passed and until equivalence decisions are taken, it would close the EU market entirely to any new third country firm. Barriers would also be placed in the way of outward investment flows, for example restricting access to emerging markets. At a time when it is vital to attract more investment both within and without the EU, it is an approach that undermines growth.

The Dawn of Social Lobbying

MoneyThe word ?lobbyist? surely doesn?t have the best connotation in the world. Depending on your reading of the definition, it generally signifies an attempt to influence government decisions, traditionally by targeting legislators or regulators. What isn?t often taken into consideration, however, is that while there are lobbyists in dark suits roaming the halls of Congress funded by entities such as big oil and pharmaceutical companies, ?lobbying? is also conducted by nonprofit groups funded by different kinds of special interests. We think of efforts, however, as ?activism,? but at the end of the day, they're just another form of lobbying. Now, a new form of ?lobbying? has emerged, but instead corporate checks or individuals donations, the currency has shifted from cash to social connections, where financial power will be trumped by network power: ?social lobbying.?

PFT: Brady misses practice with shoulder injury

Kansas City Chiefs v New York JetsGetty Images

We?ve previously predicted that, once running back LaDainian Tomlinson severs all ties with the Jets, his interview will be more compelling than a Jim Irsay tweet.

But it appears that, instead of one epic sit-down meltdown, L.T. will bleed out the details in a series of engagements and appearances.

Over the weekend, Tomlinson touched on some of the issues during a guest spot on ESPN?s Sunday NFL Countdown.? For the latest episode of Showtime?s Inside the NFL (via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News), L.T. pulls no punches.

As to the relationship between quarterback Mark Sanchez and receiver Santonio Holmes, Tomlinson said, ?It is as bad as I?ve ever been around, honestly.? You know it was at the point where I think the players could no longer do anything about it.? There was nothing that the players could do.? So when it gets to that point there are certain changes that need to happen.? Can it be fixed? . . .? I think absolutely it can be.? But they?re going to have to make some tough decisions.?

The tough decisions may include whether to keep both men on the same team.

?I would really have to sit down with them and see if they can co-exist,? Tomlinson said.? ?I mean that is a decision that I really have to make.? And if I really feel like they can?t, then you have to make a move. . . .? There are some things that obviously [Holmes] needs to work on as far as being a leader.?

Tomlinson previously criticized Holmes for his behavior during a Week 17 loss to the Dolphins.? ?I?ll tell you what, it?s tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner,? Tomlinson said at the time.? ?When you?re a captain, guys are looking at you, you?ve got to lead by example. You?ve got to play your tail off until the last play.? And when that don?t happen, you have guys looking at you in a way that captains shouldn?t be looked at.?

The Jets owe Holmes $7.75 million in guaranteed salary for 2012.? If he?s on the roster in March 2012, another $7.5 million in base salary becomes guaranteed in 2013.

Tomlinson thinks the front office shouldn?t be surprised by the situation.? ?They created this,? Tomlinson said.? ?This is the type of football team that they wanted.? Mike Tannenbaum [and] Rex Ryan are both brash, in-your-face type of style, say whatever you want, just get it done on the field.? And then it leads to other things [like] guys are calling each other out and saying I?m not getting the ball or whatever it may be.?

The reference to ?not getting the ball? surely means that Holmes didn?t think he was getting enough looks from Sanchez, a dynamic about which we reported during the season.? Near the end of the season, we reported that the Jets would privately consider alternatives to Sanchez.

So it?s unclear whether Holmes will go or Sanchez will go.? For now, the Jets have said that both men will stay.

Of course, that?s the same thing they said about former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.
