Detlef Schrempf Was Back On Parks Recreation Parks and Recreation might be the funniest show on television. Set in Indiana, Parks and Rec takes full advantage of the midwest?s obsession with sports. Earlier this season Ron Swanson channeled Bobby Knight. One of the big gets for the Harvest Festival was Larry Bird?s aunt Tilda. Last night, former Indiana Pacers? small forward Detlef Schrempf made his second cameo. And every other episode from season 2 and 3.[RIP Li?l Sebastian] PPM [and whatnot]standings So I started this whole PPM-based standings spreadsheet back in mid-July, largely for my own elucidation and amusement. At the time, our Sounders stood at 16 points, just 3 points back of 8th place in the overall table, but I couldn?t help but notice that we were 13th in PPM at a paltry 1/match, and it seemed like this was far more important to consider than the absolute point total, with such an inequity of matches played. One of the editors of this site posted something about that time, which at the time struck me as absurdly Pollyanna-ish (fairly or not) and I lashed out a bit at the author, attempting to point out that we would need an absolutely seemingly absurd at-the-time hot streak to climb back into any real playoff contention. I think my exact quote was ?23 points by the end of July and 30 by the end of August to even think about playoffs!? That?s about the time I begin to furiously add columns of computations to my spreadsheet as a way of ?forecasting? what certain results would do to help the Sounders on the tough climb back into contention. Again, I did this largely for my own amusement, occasionally sharing some of my geeky findings in comments and such.Lo and behold, the Sounders went on that torrid hot streak (we can thank the presence of a target forward and Ozzie back in the lineup, among other things, for that) and I found it pretty interesting to follow along with the Sounders progress up the charts. In a final orgy of nerdiness, I finally stumbled upon a ?trend? calculation I was content with, and the rest is history. I decided to start sharing my geeky spreadsheet on a weekly basis to a public I wasn?t entirely sure necessarily cared - but the bottom line remains, I do this mainly for my own amusement?But I will say, just before I drop this week?s table on y?all, that I have really gotten into this, and I have discovered myself in what is best described as a somewhat helpless position, more often than not. Where you really want to focus your eyeballs is on San Jose through Toronto, 6-10 in the Overall table. You?ve probably already figured it out, but that third column is change from current PPM, and its either encouraging or discouraging to see that Seattle only needs to improve slightly to make it to the playoffs (that?s encouraging) but we?re really only on track for 8th (that?s discouraging). favorite, still have outstanding quarterback controversies. Some may not be resolved until the seasons first game. Teams will portray the competitions as friendly,(really friendly, just freaking incredibly friendly)but, in reality, the uncertainty could affect how some otherwise promising teams could perform this season. Here is a look at the major controversies.Texas: The Longhorns wont rotate quarterbacks and wont announce a starter until its necessary. Fortunately, they are replete with options. Unfortunately, none of them are proven. Garrett Gilbert is the five-star incumbent, who was a budding star until being terrifyingly derailed last season. He will duel with Connor Wood and David Ash, two 64 pro-style guys with some mobility and Case McCoy, brother of Colt. Conventionally, Gilbert would be the favorite, though co-coordinator Major Applewhite owes his Texas career to bucking convention. [Prediction: Gilbert, with a short leash].[The] Ohio State: Terrelle Pryor packed up his automobile fleet and departed. Ohio State, likely, has avoided significant sanctions. The pressing concern now will be whether the school commits longterm to Luke Fickell. That depends on him having enough success to convince the Tressel true-believers. Fickell could play it conservative, ride the defense and opt for the steady hands of 26-year-old fifth-year senior Joe Bauserman. Or, he could go all out for the job and dangle with super-talented freshman Braxton Miller. Miller will be the man for the future, but Fickell does not yet have the luxury to consider it. [Prediction: Bausermania, eventually giving way to Miller midseason]Notre Dame: The Irish have a potential BCS team, but does Brian Kelly entrust it to Dayne Crist, the senior with explosive potential and five-star tools, or pesky Tommy Rees, the sophomore, who executed a limited game-plan and led the team on a winning streak to end the season Underclassmen Andrew Hendrix and Everett Golson have also made themselves names to consider. Making the right choice could affect this teams ceiling. Potential savior Nate Montana, alas, has taken his talents elsewhere. [Prediction: Crist, for better or worse]Alabama: Many felt Alabamas initial No. 2 ranking was harsh, which is curious for a team without a designated starting quarterback. Candidates A.J. McCarron and Philip Sims seem indistinguishable. Either, behind a veteran offensive line, seems capable of being a Greg McElroy facsimile, though neither will have an outlet with the capability of Julio Jones. Worst case scenario: Alabama must rely on its defense. Thats not such a bad scenario. [Prediciton: McCarron]Miami: Both Jacory Harris and Stephen Morris played extensively last season. Both were absolutely brutal. Neither could complete 55 percent of his passes. The two combined to throw 24 interceptions. Had either been even average, Randy Shannon might still be employed. New coach Al Golden will hope the problem was systemic under Mark Whipple and at least one of the two can step in and provide stability, while handing the ball off to Lamar Miller. When I heard that iCloud?(free to $100 per year; $24.99 for iTunes Match), Apple's free data-syncing service, supported Windows machines, I was at first slack-jawed--and in a good way. Was it true? Could Mac users now access their Calendar, Contacts, iTunes music, photos, and other files from a PC? My open mouth tightened to a mere smile when I realized the answer was, "Well, sort of."
Apple's iCloud is a great service that does a number of things very well?namely, automatic back-ups of iOS devices?but shouldn't be confused with other file-syncing services along the lines of SugarSync (4.5 stars) and Dropbox (4 stars). Those two services, both PCMag Editors' Choice products, give you access to any files you mark to be synchronized from virtually any machine. For example, you can create and save a presentation on your office computer, sync it, and then access it from your home computer or mobile device by simply logging into the service. But what they don't do that iCloud does is synchronize your Apple apps, like Calendar, Contacts, and iTunes.
Apple's iCloud does synchronize some document files, but not any old thing you want. iCloud doesn't think about syncing documents per se. It thinks about syncing the data you have associated with an app. For example, iCloud can synchronize office files made with Apple productivity software iWork and let you access them anywhere an iWork app is installed. It also syncs images across your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even a Windows PC. iCloud makes music you buy through iTunes accessible to you from any iTunes player, and with the optional add-on service iTunes Match ($24.99 per year), it will sync and store up to 25,000 music files (no matter how you got them) that you have in your iTunes library. But iCloud doesn't synchronize many other files that you create or edit in other apps.
Once you understand what iCloud can and can't do, you'll likely find that it's a valuable and worthwhile service nevertheless, but that doesn't mean you don't also need another file-syncing service. All Apple device owners should sign up for iCloud as soon as humanly possible, but know that it won't meet all your file-syncing needs.
iCloud Sign Up and Requirements
To get iCloud, you need an Apple ID plus at least one of the following devices:
From a Mac running Lion, look under Preferences for the iCloud logo. Select it to dig into the options. On a Windows desktop or laptop, you'll want to surf over to apple.com/icloud/setup to download and install the local software. Additionally, there is a Web interface at iCloud.com where you can access some of your backed up information online, but it's not a very comprehensive system (more on that later).
For iPhones and iPads, look in Settings for the new iCloud icon that will appear after you update to iOS 5.
Tips for Backing Up Your iPhone and iPad
One part of iCloud that you should definitely take advantage of is automatic backup. From the iCloud page of the Settings panel, look toward the very bottom of the screen for the option Storage and Backup. Make sure "iCloud Backup" is switched on. Then, you'll want to poke around in the Manage Storage section, especially if you have a lot of apps, to further determine what should get backed up and what doesn't need to be. By turning off apps that are not important, you can save a lot of space. If saving space isn't your thing, you could just buy more space. Apple gives iCloud users 5GB to start, but you can buy up to 50GB more (making 55GB total) for $100 per year. iOS devices only back up over Wi-Fi so there's no worry about the service hogging data from your data plan.
A second feature to jump on upon installing iCloud is Find My iPhone or Find My iPad. Turn it on, and it can help you locate or remotely wipe a lost or stolen phone or tablet. There's also a Find My iPhone/iPad app, which you can use to locate lost devices, including Macs, provided you set up Find My Mac on your laptop or desktop.

IRS Oversight Board

Here?s the good news for Uncle Sam: The vast majority of Americans still believe that you should never cheat on your taxes?? or,?at? least, that's what?they tell the pollsters representing the?Internal Revenue Service Oversight Board.
The bad news: The percentage of people who say you should cheat on your income taxes ?as much as possible? hit 8 percent in 2011, double what it was in 2010. That?s also higher than any other recent year in which the question was asked.
Another 6 percent of those surveyed said a little cheating here and there is OK.
The oversight board this week released its annual survey of taxpayer?s attitudes about the IRS. The survey was conducted by an outside research firm in August.
?
For the most part, despite our grumbling, Americans seem to at least accept that taxes are a necessary part of life. Almost everyone surveyed agreed that it is every American's civic duty to pay taxes, and most people said they thought tax cheats should be held accountable.
Still, that doesn?t mean we all feel the need to be the tax police. About six in 10 people said people have a personal responsibility to report tax cheats.
Americans also seem to think we should pay our fair share of taxes because it?s the right thing to do. Most people said their ?personal integrity? had a great deal of influence on whether they report their income honestly.
Other factors, such as a fear of an audit, seemed to have less influence.
